Dr. Ali Birra, May 26, 1948, is a name that resonates through the ages, not only in his homeland of Ethiopia but around the world. He is a living legend in the world of music, a cultural icon, and a symbol of resilience and unity.

Early Life and Roots

Dr. Ali Birra's journey began in the picturesque village of Ganda Kore in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. His early life was marked by challenges, including his parents' separation when he was just three years old. Raised by his father, Ali's early education included attending an Arabic school, where he learned the Arabic language. Later, he enrolled in a local academic school, where he continued to pursue his education.

The Birth of Dr. Ali Birra

In his youth, Ali Birra engaged in small on-street businesses to support himself. At the age of 13, he joined the Afran Qallo cultural group, an unofficial initiative dedicated to promoting Oromo music and culture. It was here that he first graced the stage, performing a song called "Birra dha Bari'e," which earned him the nickname "Ali Birra" or "Ali the Spring."

The Musical Odyssey

The path of Ali Birra's musical journey was not without its challenges. In 1965, during the Haile Selassie regime, the Afran Qallo cultural group was banned, and some of its members were arrested. Ali managed to evade arrest and relocated to Addis Ababa.

In the capital city, Ali Birra became a prominent figure not only in the Oromo music scene but also in the larger Ethiopian music landscape. His talent for singing extended beyond his mother tongue, Oromo, as he could sing fluently in Amharic, Arabic, Harari, and Somali. His versatility earned him admiration from various quarters, including from notable figures like Eyoel Yohannes, who recruited him as a solo singer in Oromo.

Musical Journeys

Ali Birra's career flourished as he performed in different regions of Ethiopia and even ventured to Sudan, where he sang alongside renowned artists like Mohammed Wardi. His performances were not confined to small venues; he graced larger stages like Hager Fiker and Ras Teyater. However, a significant decision led him to leave Addis Ababa, later returning to his roots.

During the early 1970s, as the Ethiopian revolution unfolded, Ali's close friend and nationalist, Ahmad Taqi, lost his life in the struggle against government forces. Ali mourned deeply and expressed his grief metaphorically through song.

A Legacy of Music

Ali Birra's legacy is defined not only by his captivating voice but also by his contributions to Oromo music. In 1971, he recorded his first album, marking a historic moment in Oromo music history. Hits like "Hin Yaadin," "Asabalee," "Ammalelee," and "Gamachu" became anthems that resonated with the Oromo people.

His albums featured songs not only in Oromo but also in Sudanese and Harari languages, demonstrating his commitment to promoting cultural diversity and unity through music.

A Journey Beyond Borders

Ali Birra's influence extended beyond Ethiopia's borders. In 1985, he married Birgitta Åström, a Swedish admirer. His international journey took him to Saudi Arabia and later to the United States, where he pursued studies at the Los Angeles Arts Academy. He graduated in 1990 and by 1992, had released his first two albums outside Ethiopia, earning him international fame. Through the years, Ali Birra continued to conduct concerts and festivals around the world, captivating audiences with his melodious voice.
